Weighing the anchor

The giant starboard anchor of the Titanic is raised for the last time. In Queenstown terms (i.e. using Imperial rather than US measurements) the liner used a length of six cables of wrought-iron chainwork. A cable measured fifteen fathoms, so it took several minutes for the anchor to come to the surface. Taken at 1.55pm on 11th April, 1912, the photograph shows the very plates that were prised apart by the iceberg.
